Maria Helena da Cruz Coelho holds a PhD with habilitation in History and is Professor Emerita of the University of Coimbra. She served as President of the Portuguese Society for Medieval Studies from 2013 to 2025 and as Vice-President of the Portuguese Academy of History from 2018 to 2026. She is a Full Member of that Academy, as well as of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, and an Emeritus Member of the Academy of the Navy. Internationally, she is, among other distinctions, a member of the Royal Academy of History (Madrid) and a Full Member of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (Rio de Janeiro). She was Director of the Revista Portuguesa de História from 2006 to 2016 and has served, and continues to serve, on the editorial and scientific boards of several national and international journals. She belongs to several national and international committees and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda. She has participated in evaluation panels for History and Archaeology at both A3ES and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and has been involved in numerous national and international research projects. She has taught at the École Nationale des Chartes and at various Brazilian and European universities. She has received awards from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Portuguese Academy of History and was decorated, in 2011, with the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator.
