João Gouveia Monteiro is Full Professor (retired) of the University of Coimbra, where he obtained his PhD in History in 1997. He has served as a visiting professor at the Université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3 and at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris, and undertook research placements at the University of Bologna and the University of La Laguna (Tenerife). Between 1995 and 2001 he directed a multidisciplinary research project at the site of the Battle of Aljubarrota. He is a Corresponding Member of the Academia Portuguesa da História and served as the first President of the Associação Ibérica de História Militar (séculos IV–XVI) from 2015 to 2022. He founded and directs the Academia para o Encontro de Culturas e de Religiões (APECER-UC). At the University of Coimbra he has also held several institutional positions, including Vice-Rector for Culture, Director of the Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra, and Director of the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra. He was a member of the University’s General Council for the terms 2012–2016 and 2020–2024.

Main interests and research topics: Military History, European History in the Middle Ages, Ancient History and History of Religion.
